Petra, Jordan Introduces the 'Green Growth Tourism' Project
Debra John — December 5, 2025Petra, Jordan’s most famous archaeological site, has launched the $15-million 'Green Growth Tourism' project in partnership with the U.S. Embassy to support environmentally responsible tourism. The initiative aims to protect Petra’s cultural and natural heritage while allowing the tourism sector to grow sustainably. Supported by the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) and U.S. government funding, the project emphasizes eco-friendly practices that reduce environmental strain on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During meetings between PDTRA officials and U.S. Embassy representatives, both sides discussed implementation plans focused on minimizing ecological impact, improving resource management, and supporting local communities. With millions of visitors each year, Petra faces increasing pressure on its fragile landscape, making environmental protection a priority.
The project introduces measures to conserve the site’s delicate ecosystem, promote sustainable infrastructure, and enhance visitor experiences while reducing pollution and waste. Overall, the initiative aims to position Petra as a leading model for green, responsible tourism.
