Malawi Prisons are Adopting Eco-Friendly Cooking Methods
Kanesa D — January 12, 2026The Malawi Prison Service is setting a national example by adopting eco-friendly cooking methods across its facilities, replacing traditional fuelwood pots with electric pots to serve its approximately 15,000 inmates. The transition has made meal preparation faster, cleaner, and more efficient, while improving food hygiene by eliminating contamination from smoke and ash.
The move also supports environmental conservation by reducing deforestation and pollution linked to fuelwood use. From a cost perspective, electricity has proven more economical once transport and handling expenses are considered. Going forward, the service plans to rely primarily on electric pots, with fuelwood retained as a backup option.
“Using electric pots helps manage deforestation, as we no longer need to cut down trees for fuel,” said Steve Meke, Public Relations Officer for the Malawi Prison Service. “It also allows us to plant more trees around prison stations, promoting conservation efforts in surrounding communities.”
