Clean Energy Storage Facilities
Vistra Corp.'s Moss Landing Facility is Innovative
Colin Smith — August 15, 2025The Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility, co-located with Vistra’s existing natural gas–fueled power plant in Monterey County, California, reached a total capacity of 750 MW power and 3,000 MWh storage following its Phase III expansion. That phase added 350 MW/1,400 MWh of lithium-ion battery capacity, bringing the facility online on June 2, 2023 through 122 individual shipping-container modules housing more than 110,000 battery units. This expansion leveraged existing industrial zoning and transmission infrastructure to establish the world’s largest grid-scale battery energy storage system by capacity.
Operating under a 15-year resource adequacy agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company that commenced on August 1, 2023, Moss Landing stores surplus renewable generation during periods of low demand and dispatches stored energy during peak load or supply shortfalls. By smoothing the variability of solar and wind power and providing firm, dispatchable capacity, the facility bolsters California’s grid reliability, supports the integration of intermittent clean energy resources, and contributes to the state’s broader decarbonization and energy-security objectives.
