Oregon Unveils the Nation’s Largest Solar-Plus-Storage Facility
Georgia Wray Norsten — July 21, 2025Solar-plus-storage facility development is reaching new heights with the Oregon Solar Plus system, set to become the largest of its kind in the United States. Located in Morrow County, the Sunstone Solar project will combine 1,200 megawatts of solar capacity with up to 7,200 megawatt-hours of battery storage -- enough to power approximately 800,000 homes annually. Developed by Pine Gate Renewables, the project integrates long-duration lithium-ion and zinc-based battery technologies, positioning Oregon as a leader in grid-resilient renewable energy.
Beyond clean energy generation, the initiative also includes an $11 million investment in local wheat farms, aligning energy expansion with agricultural and community support. As utilities race to meet Oregon’s mandate for 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040, this landmark project addresses solar intermittency and storage scalability. With construction expected to begin in 2026, Sunstone Solar offers a scalable blueprint for clean energy deployment with both environmental and economic benefits.
