Quantum Energy Forecasting Systems

SQC and Schneider Electric Improve Renewable Energy Forecasting

Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) and Schneider Electric are advancing quantum energy forecasting systems designed to improve the management of increasingly complex electricity grids. Backed by A$3.6 million in Stage 2 funding from Australia's Critical Technologies Challenge Program, the project uses SQC's Watermelon quantum-enhanced AI chip alongside Schneider Electric's forecasting technology.

During Stage 1, Watermelon was applied to next-day energy forecasting data over 12 months, producing an average 20% improvement in forecasting accuracy compared to the classical benchmark, with gains reaching 41%. Stage 2 will expand testing to hundreds of Australian homes and integrate the system directly into Schneider Electric's AI workflows.

More accurate predictions could help energy providers coordinate rooftop solar, batteries and electric vehicles while increasing renewable energy utilization. Commercially, the project demonstrates a practical application for quantum computing while giving energy companies tools to improve grid efficiency and potentially lower consumer costs.
