Mycelium Door Designs
Rebound and Partners Design the World's First Door Grown From Fungi
Kanesa D — March 31, 2026Danish mycelium specialist Rebound has partnered with architecture studio Det Levende Hus to develop what they describe as the first mass-produced interior door featuring a core grown from fungal mycelium.
The process involves cultivating the fast-growing root structure of fungi within a mould to form a lightweight, rigid panel with inherent acoustic insulation properties. This mycelium core is then encased in a timber frame made from reclaimed and surplus wood, including offcuts sourced from Danish flooring manufacturer Dinesen. The project resulted in a door designed to minimize material waste across its production lifecycle while offering a sustainable alternative to conventional interior door construction.
“It’s about how natural materials can transform our experience of space, visually, acoustically, even emotionally," said architect Jens Martin Suzuki-Højrup.
