REWE Green Farming Market Grows Its Own Lettuce on Its Rooftop
Laura McQuarrie — May 27, 2026The REWE Green Farming Market features Germany's largest rooftop farm, and it's being built atop a supermarket so that lettuce can go from the rooftop to store shelves in just 23 days. The rooftop farm is designed to grow up to 900,000 salad mixes annually, and the first lettuce from the supermarket roof will be harvested this summer.
Berlin's first supermarket with a rooftop farm prominently features wood, a resource that stores carbon, is modular, and can be dismantled and repurposed at some point in the future. “With REWE Green Farming, we are further developing our green building strategy and combining circular construction with urban food cultivation,” explained Peter Maly, CEO of the REWE Group. What's more, waste heat from the store, a heat pump, and rainwater from a cistern help to create optimal growing conditions for the produce grown on the roof.
