Urban Train Prototypes
Munich's Forthcoming S-Bahn Train Generation Premiered
Kalin Ned — October 15, 2025A full-scale, walk-through demonstration model of Munich's forthcoming S-Bahn train generation has been unveiled to the public at the IAA Mobility event. The prototype was presented through a collaboration between the Bavarian government, Deutsche Bahn, and Siemens Mobility.
The 22-meter-long S-Bahn train prototype allows for a direct experiential preview of the design and features that will characterize the new urban amenities. The production versions are intended to be over 200 meters in length, which significantly increases passenger capacity to approximately 1,800 individuals per train. The interior design philosophy prioritizes passenger flow and comfort by incorporating elements such as time-adjusted lighting, robust and sustainable materials, increased legroom, USB-C charging ports, and an enhanced climate control system.
The new S-Bahn trains are scheduled to commence service in the Munich metropolitan network by late 2028.
