Switzerland to Launch a Sustainable Basel-Copenhagen Night Train

As part of its strategic commitment to sustainable mobility, Switzerland has announced a €48 million (CHF 47 million) investment to support the development of a new international night train route connecting Basel, Switzerland, and Copenhagen, Denmark. The funding, allocated through 2030, reinforces Switzerland’s long-term vision to promote climate-friendly transport alternatives and reduce reliance on short-haul air travel.

The upcoming EuroNight service—developed by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)—is scheduled to begin operations in April 2026. Running three times per week in both directions, the Basel–Copenhagen–Malmö route will offer passengers a reliable and environmentally responsible travel option between Central Europe and the Nordic region.

Designed to combine sustainability with convenience, the new night train service will provide stable schedules, eliminating the uncertainties often associated with air travel such as security delays or terminal congestion. Travellers will benefit from comfortable overnight journeys while significantly reducing their carbon footprint.
