Sewage sludge management is becoming increasingly important as wastewater treatment plants seek more environmentally sustainable solutions to handle rising volumes. Researchers at Jeonbuk National University have developed an approach that improves how sewage sludge is treated while reducing environmental impact. One method gaining attention is chemical-enhanced primary treatment (CEPT), which uses chemicals to separate waste more efficiently and consume less energy than traditional biological systems.

To further reduce waste, the sludge can undergo pyrolysis, a high-temperature process that decreases volume, breaks down harmful substances, and produces biochar. This biochar has potential environmental benefits, such as storing carbon and reducing landfill use. However, biochar from CEPT sludge differs from conventional types, particularly in how it holds heavy metals.

Understanding how these metals behave is important to prevent pollution. This research helps ensure that sewage sludge can be treated in a safer, more eco-friendly way while supporting sustainable waste management practices.
