Waste-Conscious Sustainable Ceramic Tiles

At the Royal Danish Academy's ‘Imagining Futures through Architecture and Design’ exhibition, Anna Maria Sand Jensen presented Unwasted — a project that transformed agricultural and food industry waste into sustainable ceramic tiles. Each unit is composed of 65% to 100% waste materials.

Anna Maria Sand Jensen was able to bring the Unwasted project to life through collaboration with Danæg A/S, Danæg Group, and BOFA Bornholm. This design initiative clearly demonstrates how waste from one industry could become building materials for another. The sustainable ceramic tiles also challenge the aesthetic preference for uniformity by celebrating color variation and unpredictability. As such, Unwasted opens up a new palette of materials for architects and designers that are not only sustainable but also beautiful in their unpredictability.

The collaboration with established food industry partners like Danæg, one of Denmark's largest egg producers, demonstrates that the project is not a speculative art piece but a prototype with real industrial backing.
