Bio-Based Agricultural Commodities
Terra Oleo Boasts a Portfolio of Microbial-Derived Lipids
Kalin Ned — September 25, 2025Singapore-based biotechnology company Terra Oleo has initiated its public operations with financial backing and selection into a prominent climate technology fellowship program. The company's core goal is the development of bio-based substitutes for key agricultural commodities.
Terra Oleo employs a fermentation process using engineered microorganisms to produce lipid molecules that mimic the functional properties of palm oil and cocoa butter. This is noteworthy as both are foundational ingredients in a vast range of consumer goods in the food and cosmetic sectors. Terra Oleo's biomanufacturing approach is designed to circumvent the environmental and social challenges linked to traditional cultivation of palm oil and cocoa butter — such as deforestation and supply chain volatility exacerbated by climate change. The technology also aims to offer a more consistent and controllable production method that avoids the energy-intensive refining and hazardous byproducts associated with conventional processing of these commodities.
