Participatory Plastic-Upcycling Projects
EL CONSULADO Supports Frahydel Falczuk's The Plastic Sea
Kalin Ned — May 6, 2026EL CONSULADO, an artists' collective focused on Venezuelan and diasporic contemporary art expression, called attention to The Plastic Sea — a participatory installation by artist Frahydel Falczuk. The project was part of NYC DOT Art’s Car-Free Earth Day 2026, which took place on Saturday, April 25.
Frahydel Falczuk's The Plastic Sea invited the public to weave discarded plastic materials into an immersive, wave-like environment. The activity transformed waste into a collective statement about consumption, public space, and environmental stewardship. In essence, the installation offers a tactile, social, and creative way to confront the problem of plastic pollution.
The Plastic Sea is an evolving, collaborative project that originally took shape during the EL CONSULADO collective’s early days. It continues to grow through community participation and movement.
