Lufthansa Group Rebuilt Its Climate Portfolio With Carbon Removal
Adam Harrie — May 26, 2026References: newsroom.lufthansagroup
Lufthansa Group rebuilt its climate protection portfolio to include 14 certified climate initiatives, doubling permanent CO₂ removal to around 20% and adding direct air carbon capture and storage for the first time. The aviation carbon removal climate projects span biochar, DACCS and reforestation efforts across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and other regions. Partnerships include climate technology companies such as Climeworks, Deep Sky and 1PointFive.
Lufthansa passengers contributed to projects covering more than 710,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ in 2025, up roughly 20% year over year.
As aviation faces deep decarbonization challenges, Lufthansa shows how shifting a passenger climate portfolio toward permanent, technology-based carbon removal can strengthen the long-term credibility of an airline’s climate commitments beyond operational emissions reductions alone.
