Reforestation Carbon Removal Deals

Google, Meta and McKinsey Back Carbon Dioxide Removal Deal

Members of the Symbiosis Coalition, including Google, McKinsey, and Meta, have signed carbon dioxide removal (CDR) offtake agreements with Living Carbon. These agreements support reforestation projects on degraded land in the Appalachian region of the United States.

The agreements involve the removal of 131,240 tonnes of CO₂ over 10 years. The project specifically aims to restore former mine sites and agricultural areas, where issues such as poor soil quality, erosion, and invasive species hinder natural regeneration.

Living Carbon intends to plant native hardwood and pine species while maintaining the sites, registered under Isometric’s Reforestation Protocol, which provides a framework for monitoring and verification.

The initiative provides lease payments for landowners and creates local employment opportunities, connecting ecological restoration with regional economic activities.
