AI-Driven Solar Manufacturing

AI-driven solar manufacturing is becoming a focus for ES Foundry through a new collaboration with MIT’s Initiative for New Manufacturing. The solar cell producer is committing $1.5 million over three years to explore how artificial intelligence, automation, digital twins, cybersecurity, and advanced operating practices can improve factory performance. Research can be applied at ES Foundry’s Greenwood, South Carolina facility, providing a commercial-scale environment for examining production efficiency, equipment performance, process control, and workforce development.

The collaboration demonstrates how clean-energy manufacturers can move beyond expanding physical production capacity toward making existing operations smarter and more productive. Access to MIT researchers, students, and manufacturers from other industries could help ES Foundry identify approaches that translate into higher yields and stronger operational performance. Similar research partnerships could give manufacturers a practical pathway for testing emerging factory technologies while developing the specialized workforce needed to operate increasingly digitized production environments.
