AI Waste Sortation Systems

Kent County's Department of Public Works partnered with AMP to deploy an 'AMP ONE' waste sortation system that recovers valuable recyclables from mixed municipal solid waste before it enters the county's waste-to-energy process. The system processes about 25 tons per hour, using computer vision and pneumatic sortation to identify and recover cardboard and select plastics from bagged trash.

By recovering recyclables before combustion, the system improves the thermal characteristics of the remaining waste, enabling the waste-to-energy facility to process more material within existing operating limits while extending regional landfill life.

As municipalities face mounting pressure on landfill capacity, this project demonstrates how AI-powered sortation can unlock additional resource recovery from existing waste infrastructure without requiring costly new facility investments.
