The Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion, designed by Chat Architects near Bangkok, Thailand, embodies a sustainability-driven approach rooted in local knowledge and low-impact construction. Developed in collaboration with local fishermen, the project supports the preservation of Angsila’s historic coastal fishing industry while reinforcing environmentally responsible practices.

The pavilion reinterprets traditional bamboo scaffolding systems used for oyster cultivation, employing a rapidly renewable material that is lightweight, durable, and locally sourced. By adapting vernacular construction techniques, the structure minimizes embodied carbon and reduces reliance on industrial materials. Moreover, its open framework allows for natural ventilation and unobstructed tidal flows, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding marine ecosystem.

Operationally, the pavilion promotes a localized food system. Visitors are transported by fishermen to harvest oysters and mussels directly from the site, supporting small-scale aquaculture and reducing supply chain impacts. When not in use for gatherings, the structure functions as a community fishing platform, extending its social and environmental value.
