Tropical Airport Terminals

The Techo International Airport Blends Culture with Sustainability

The Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh introduces a tropical design language that connects air travel with nature. Designed by Foster + Partners, the terminal’s sweeping roof canopy rests on sculptural steel columns shaped like trees, filtering light into spacious interiors. The material palette references Cambodia’s landscape through soft tones, textured finishes, and an emphasis on natural ventilation. The design prioritizes comfort, atmosphere, and ecological integration over traditional grandeur.

Lush greenery extends through the terminal, creating indoor gardens that blur boundaries between architecture and environment. Solar infrastructure and modular construction methods reduce long-term energy use and maintenance demands. The Techo International Airport embodies a shift toward low-impact aviation, turning infrastructure into a serene, human-centered experience rooted in local climate and cultural context.
