Green Airport Concepts

Ethiopia's New International Airport will Boast Energy-Efficient Terminals

Energy-efficient terminals are at the heart of Ethiopia’s vision for the new Bishoftu International Airport, a landmark project designed to redefine sustainable aviation in Africa. Developed under a “green airport concept by Ethiopian Airlines, the facility will incorporate solar power systems, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient building technologies to minimize its environmental footprint." These innovations aim to reduce carbon emissions, conserve natural resources, and enhance operational efficiency across all airport functions.

Positioned as a model for environmentally responsible infrastructure, Bishoftu International Airport aligns with the African Union’s Climate Strategy and its net-zero goals, demonstrating how large-scale aviation projects can integrate climate resilience into their design. By prioritizing renewable energy and sustainable construction practices, the airport seeks to balance the need for greater connectivity with ecological preservation.

This initiative underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to leading the region toward a greener future—where modernization and environmental stewardship progress hand in hand.
