Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) has introduced lyocell fiber into Indonesia’s batik industry, combining environmentally responsible man-made cellulosic materials with the country’s UNESCO-recognized textile traditions. The initiative aims to support more sustainable fabric production while preserving traditional craftsmanship.

Lyocell is produced from renewable wood sources and manufactured through a closed-loop process that recovers and reuses most solvents, helping reduce waste and environmental impact. When blended with other cellulosic fibers, lyocell improves moisture absorption and dye uptake, resulting in sharper motifs and longer-lasting color. This efficiency can reduce excess dye use and resource consumption during production.

The fabric also offers enhanced breathability and a softer drape, improving garment comfort and quality. By integrating lyocell with traditional batik techniques, including Cirebon’s waleran method, the collaboration helps artisans maintain cultural authenticity while aligning with growing global demand for sustainable, responsibly produced fashion.
