Vietnam Features Eleven Biosphere Reserves
Debra John — November 3, 2025Vietnam hosts eleven 'UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves,' reflecting an expanding commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable land management.
Covering a wide range of ecosystems—from tropical forests and wetlands to coastal and marine habitats—these protected areas play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity, regulating climate systems, and supporting long-term ecological balance. Each reserve contributes to global conservation objectives by safeguarding endangered species, protecting natural resources, and promoting the sustainable use of local environments.
Functioning as "centers for ecological research and environmental education, the reserves facilitate collaboration among scientists, local authorities, and communities to develop adaptive conservation strategies." Vietnam’s preservation efforts align with "UNESCO’s Hangzhou Strategic Action Plan (2026–2035), emphasizing ecosystem restoration, sustainable tourism practices, and community participation in environmental stewardship." Through these initiatives, the country advances the ecological integrity of its landscapes, ensuring that conservation and sustainable development progress hand in hand.
