Saving Nature Expands its River Corridor Project
Debra John — October 16, 2025Saving Nature, in partnership with Indonesia’s Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL), has expanded its 'River Corridor Project' within Sumatra’s Leuser Ecosystem by adding 26.4 acres of newly protected land.
This brings "the total safeguarded area to 1,478 acres, strengthening efforts to reconnect vital forest habitats and support endangered species." The project restores natural corridors for elephant migration and enhances connectivity between fragmented forests, promoting wildlife movement, reducing human–wildlife conflict, and improving ecosystem resilience.
Spanning "2.6 million hectares, the Leuser Ecosystem is one of the world’s most biodiverse rainforests, ranging from mountain cloud forests to coastal mangroves." It remains the only place where Sumatran tigers, elephants, rhinos, and orangutans coexist in the wild. Amid threats from deforestation, poaching, and agricultural expansion, this expansion represents a critical investment in long-term habitat restoration and ecological sustainability.
