Coffee-Based Printing Inks
University Researchers Showcased Printing Ink Extracted from Coffee
Colin Smith — April 1, 2026A collaboration between Natural Indigo Finland, Tampere University of Applied Sciences and Siegwerk presented a coffee‑based printing ink at the PacTec, FoodTec and PlastExpo Nordic event, where it won the Sustainable Innovations competition. The water‑based ink uses a bio‑colorant extracted from coffee production side streams supplied by Meira and contains no volatile organic compounds. Its binder system is based on Siegwerk’s renewable raw material varnish. The project has progressed from laboratory development to industrial proof of concept, demonstrated through successful printing on Paptic, a recyclable fiber‑based packaging material.
The initiative is positioned as a circular economy solution that converts waste streams into functional pigments for packaging and textile applications. Researchers have improved the ink’s technical performance and color strength, and partners note its potential to reduce reliance on fossil‑based pigments. The project was selected as the competition winner following a pitch process evaluated by an expert panel, receiving recognition for creating new value within an existing industry. The innovation is also being showcased in exhibitions focused on bio‑based materials, highlighting its potential for broader commercial scaling.
