TU Graz Utilizes Espresso as a Staining Agent
Debra John — January 10, 2026Staining agent alternatives are being redefined by researchers at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), who have demonstrated that espresso can replace a commonly used toxic chemical in electron microscopy. In biological research, "samples must be treated with a staining agent to make tissue structures visible under an electron microscope; the standard option, uranyl acetate, is highly toxic and radioactive, creating safety and environmental concerns."
The TU Graz research team found that ordinary espresso delivers comparable image clarity without the environmental risks associated with hazardous substances. Samples prepared using espresso "showed results similar to those treated with uranyl acetate."
By using a natural, non-toxic material, this approach reduces chemical waste, limits environmental contamination, and improves laboratory safety. The findings, published in the journal Methods, highlight how simple, sustainable solutions can support more environmentally responsible scientific research practices.
