Corporate Climate Target Frameworks
SBTi Opened Consultation on Its Corporate Net-Zero Standard
Adam Harrie — May 22, 2026The Science Based Targets initiative released a revised Corporate Net-Zero Standard for public consultation, proposing that companies be allowed to set Scope 3 targets tied to purchasing decisions and revenue from low-carbon products, not just emissions-reduction percentages. The corporate net-zero science-based targets draft also separates Scope 1 and Scope 2 into distinct requirements, sets a 2040 deadline for transitioning to low-carbon electricity and creates lighter-touch pathways for smaller companies and suppliers in emerging markets.
Progress tracking and potential interim carbon removal targets are also under consideration. The consultation closes on June 1, with more than 3,000 companies already participating in the existing framework.
SBTi shows how integrating procurement and electricity strategy into target-setting requirements can make net-zero commitments more operational rather than leaving them as standalone sustainability pledges.
