EV Battery Whitepapers
CATL and the Ellen Macarthur Foundation Partner for a Circular Initiative
Debra John — January 29, 2026CATL and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation have partnered to release an EV battery whitepaper focused on building a more environmentally sustainable battery system. Launched at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2026, the report provides a clear roadmap for making electric vehicle batteries more circular, from design and use to recovery and reuse.
Developed with input from more than 30 organizations across the battery value chain, the whitepaper translates circular economy principles into practical actions that can be applied at scale. It emphasizes keeping batteries and critical minerals in use for as long as possible, rather than relying on continuous extraction of new raw materials.
By extending battery lifecycles, the roadmap shows how circular systems reduce mining-related environmental damage, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and minimize waste. It also supports renewable energy adoption by improving material efficiency and resource security. Overall, the initiative demonstrates industry-led approaches.
