Sustainable Fashion Initiatives
Redress & the UN Fashion and Lifestyle Network Partnered
Kalin Ned — October 2, 2025A collaborative initiative between the non-governmental organization Redress and the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network recently convened a group of designer advocates at the United Nations General Assembly. The central purpose of this gathering was to highlight a perceived shortfall within the conventional fashion sector regarding the integration of ecological and ethical considerations and to advocate for increased support for brands that are already aligning their operations with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
The event featured a panel of creators from India, the Philippines, and the United States, who addressed a range of complex issues such as social and gender disparities, the environmental consequences of excessive consumption, and the practice of exporting textile waste to developing nations. A key argument presented was that the current fashion system often marginalizes sustainability in favor of other commercial objectives, and a concerted effort is required to amplify the influence of purpose-driven enterprises that generate positive social and environmental outcomes within their supply chains.
