Upcycled Plant Power's Fiba Repurposes Waste Broccoli Stems

Broccoli stems are entirely edible and pack just as much nutritional value as the florets—if not more—yet their tough texture and the longstanding preference for tender tops mean they are mostly discarded, but Upcycled Plant Power's Fiba turns them into a high-value ingredient. UPP introduced its novel fiber product to UK foodservice, addressing over 350,000 tonnes of broccoli biomass that is discarded or left unused annually in the country.

UPP uses artificial intelligence to automate the harvest process of broccoli stems and stalks, and sells Fiba to food producers in both wet and dry formats. Due to differences in moisture content between the two options, the fiber and protein content vary, but Fiba has applications in everything from sausages and burgers to sauces, stews and cakes.
