Films for Future Seeks to Develop Eco-Friendly Cellulose Coatings
Kanesa D — November 14, 2025The Films for Future (F3) project is advancing sustainable packaging by developing cellulose-based coatings to replace conventional plastic films. The collaboration is a joint project between VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, LUT University, and 34 industrial partners, and funded by the EU’s ERDF programme. F3 has evolved from transparent cellulose films to versatile coatings for various board grades, offering enhanced gas barrier properties while using less material.
Produced continuously at VTT’s pilot line in Bioruukki, Espoo, the coatings can incorporate conventional dissolving pulps or kraft pulps from softwood and hardwood. Testing also confirmed that boards coated with F3 cellulose maintain recyclability under soil, marine, and industrial composting conditions, aligning with PPWR standards without impacting cardboard biodegradability.
