Surplus Agricultural Product Distributions
Food Recovery Network Battles Food Insecurity and Waste
Kalin Ned — September 21, 2025Food Recovery Network is operating a targeted program in Baltimore to address food insecurity and reduce waste through the distribution of surplus agricultural products.
Thus, the program provides families with free access to fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be discarded. The organization utilizes a data-informed methodology to identify locations where both the need for nutritional support and the availability of excess produce intersect effectively. As part of this initiative, Food Recovery Network established temporary distribution points at elementary schools to serve low-income communities.
The operation relies on collaborative efforts with local educational institutions, community groups, and a network of university student volunteers for implementation. Since its recent launch, the Food Recovery Network program has reported substantial quantities of food redirected from potential waste streams to households
