Hydrogen Production Methods

Hanyang University Researchers Find a Cost-Effective Way for Hydrogen
Debra John — June 13, 2025Researchers at Hanyang University have developed a cost-effective method to produce clean hydrogen, offering a promising step forward in the global push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen, which emits no carbon when used, is considered a key clean energy source. One common production method, electrochemical water-splitting, uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. However, this process typically depends on rare and expensive catalysts, limiting its large-scale use.
To address this challenge, the research team created a "new type of catalyst using boron-doped cobalt phosphide nanosheets formed through metal-organic frameworks." As a result, the catalyst is not only more affordable but also highly efficient and long-lasting.
Furthermore, while existing materials known as "transition metal phosphides (TMPs) perform well in producing hydrogen, they fall short in oxygen generation." This new catalyst improves both steps of the process, making hydrogen production more practical and accelerating the transition to renewable energy.
