The Icy Initiative Helps Track the Health of Glaciers
Kalin Ned — August 8, 2025The Icy Initiative introduces an innovative approach for park visitors to actively participate in tracking the health of glaciers across Canada’s national and provincial parks. The activation encourages tourists to take photos at designated glacier viewpoints using specially installed cell phone stands. As such, the program transforms casual sightseeing into a meaningful scientific contribution.
The Icy Initiative allows participants can easily upload their images via QR codes or a dedicated website. The data will enable researchers at the University of Waterloo to analyze glacial retreat, thinning, and other critical changes tied to the health of glaciers.
Aside from providing valuable long-term data for environmental studies, this collaborative effort also enhances public awareness of climate impacts.
