Green Science Alliance Proposes a 3D 'Jungle Gym' Structure
Debra John — December 3, 2025The 3D 'Jungle Gym' structure proposed by Dr. Ryohei Mori of Green Science Alliance Co., Ltd. introduces a new way to generate solar power that may reduce the environmental strain caused by traditional large-scale solar farms. The company, known for advancing technologies that support decarbonization, plans to conduct proof-of-concept testing in the near future.
Japan faces a shortage of flat, open land suitable for solar installations, which often leads developers to clear forests to make room for large solar arrays. This practice removes natural CO₂-absorbing forests, disrupts ecosystems, weakens soil stability, and increases the risks of flooding and landslides. It can also alter natural landscapes and create conflicts with nearby communities.
Most existing mega solar facilities rely on silicon-based solar cells, though other technologies are emerging. The proposed 3D system aims to use space more efficiently, reducing the need for land-intensive development.
