Award-Winning Low-Emission Fertilizers
NitroCapt Uses Air and Plasma to Develop Its Fertilizer
Kalin Ned — September 26, 2025The Swedish company NitroCapt has been named the recipient of the 2025 Food Planet Prize for its innovative low-emission fertilizer.
NitroCapt's product stands as an alternative method for producing nitrogen fertilizer, a critical agricultural input currently responsible for a substantial portion of the world's carbon dioxide emissions. The company utilizes plasma technology, powered by renewable electricity, to extract nitrogen directly from the air and convert it into a usable nitrate fertilizer. This process is reported to be dramatically more energy-efficient than the conventional century-old method, which relies heavily on fossil fuels like natural gas as both an energy source and a chemical feedstock. Additionally, the low-emission fertilizer's formulation as a nitrate is beneficial for soil health.
The company is currently advancing from laboratory development to pilot-scale industrial production.
