Papercrete Art Installations

Morphosis by Raza Zahid Uses Waste to Nuture a Living Spatial System

Morphosis by Raza Zahid is an experimental installation that reimagines discarded paper as a dynamic, living architectural system. Developed through research into paper waste and the cultivation of microgreens on paper-based substrates, the project spans a 5 × 5 × 5 metre structure composed of powder-coated metal frames supporting hand-formed papercrete elements.

Drawing on paper-mâché techniques, shredded paper is transformed into a structural medium that retains form while enabling plant growth. Together, these components create a porous, tree-like spatial envelope, with each handcrafted element contributing to variations in density, light, and shadow.

As visitors move through the space, shifting spatial conditions—ranging from compressed pathways to open volumes—create an immersive environment that blurs the boundary between interior and exterior. Microgreens cultivated directly on the surfaces introduce a temporal layer, as cycles of growth and decay continuously reshape the installation.
