NH3 Clean Energy is Aiming to Reduce Ammonia Bunkering Emissions
Colin Smith — June 12, 2025NH3 Clean Energy has entered into a joint development agreement (JDA) with Pilbara Ports Authority and Oceania Marine Energy to develop low-emissions ammonia bunkering operations at the Port of Dampier in Western Australia. Under the agreement, Pilbara Ports Authority will manage port operations—including issuing bunkering licenses and ensuring safe procedures—while NH3 Clean Energy will supply low-emissions ammonia derived from its WAH2 project. Oceania Marine Energy will provide and operate the ammonia bunker vessels via ship-to-ship transfers. The initiative is structured to support iron ore carriers servicing the Pilbara-Asia maritime corridor and represents a coordinated effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport.
The collaborative effort is designed to establish a pathway for commissioning ammonia bunkering services by 2030. The JDA outlines a process to secure technical feasibility, obtain environmental and regulatory approvals, and reach final investment decisions on the necessary port infrastructure and vessel modifications. The development is targeted at addressing the fuel requirements of bulk carriers operating in a high-traffic export corridor and aligns with broader industry trends aimed at decarbonizing maritime logistics.
