Off-Grid EV Charging
Renewable Propane Powers Battery-Backed Mobile Fast Chargers
Mursal Rahman — June 23, 2026Off-grid EV charging is emerging as a practical solution for locations where traditional electrical infrastructure is unavailable, temporary, or difficult to deploy. During a recent NASCAR event in San Diego, Suburban Propane collaborated with ABB and Kempower to demonstrate a mobile charging setup powered by renewable propane-fueled generators and battery energy storage systems.
The system generated electricity using renewable propane, which was stored in batteries and then supplied to portable DC fast chargers. This approach enabled electric vehicle charging without relying on a direct grid connection, providing greater flexibility for temporary events, remote sites, and emergency response operations.
For businesses, the project highlights growing interest in portable energy systems that can support electrification beyond fixed infrastructure networks. Mobile charging solutions may help event operators, fleet managers, construction sites, and remote facilities expand EV access while reducing deployment costs and improving energy availability in areas with limited grid capacity.
