Passionfruit Gel Formulas
Pectins Extracted from Passiflora Ligularis May Be Used for Cosmetics
Kanesa D — December 5, 2025Universidad de Antioquia in Colombia has conducted research to extract pectins from passiflora lingularis to help with moisturizing and gelling across various cosmetic formulations. The research primarily focused on improving extraction methods and determining how well they perform in gel prototypes.
The research found that optimal extraction was achieved with citric acid under microwave irridation at 60 degrees for 15 minutes, with work focusing on the granadilla peel and mesocarp. These areas of the fruit are typically discarded, which makes this project extra beneficial in the realm of sustainable beauty. The extracted pectin was packed into eight gel formulations and monitored over seven days.
With this new project, US manufacturers and suppliers may be able to utilize plant-based, upcycled alternatives to synthetic humectants.
