Modular Aircraft Seats

‍RECARO’s 'R Sphere Seat' Reduces CO₂ Emissions

RECARO has developed the 'R Sphere Seat,' a modular aircraft seating concept designed to lower environmental impact through weight reduction and sustainable material use. The seat "reduces weight by approximately 1.5 kilograms per passenger, which can contribute to an estimated reduction of up to 55 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually per single-aisle aircraft, depending on operational conditions." Lower aircraft weight directly supports decreased fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

The R Sphere incorporates alternative materials intended to reduce reliance on conventional fossil-based resources. Upholstery covers are made from recyclable eco-fabrics, literature pockets utilize reclaimed fishing nets, backrests include a sugarcane-based composite, and inlays feature responsibly sourced wood elements.

Its modular architecture allows individual components to be replaced or recycled, extending product lifespan and reducing waste. Designed for durability and easier maintenance, the seat supports circularity principles while aligning cabin innovation with aviation sustainability objectives.
