Battery Recycling Program Expansions
Vermont Aims to Recycle Single-Use and Rechargeable Batteries
Debra John — February 19, 2026Rechargeable batteries are central to Vermont’s newly expanded statewide recycling program, enacted under legislation that broadens the range of eligible battery types for safe collection and processing. Announced in conjunction with National Battery Day, the expansion highlights the importance of responsible disposal practices and increased public awareness. The initiative is administered by The Battery Network, the state-approved battery stewardship organization responsible for coordinating collection, transportation, and recycling efforts.
Under the revised program guidelines, "residents can recycle most primary (single-use) and rechargeable batteries weighing up to 25 pounds, or 2,000 watt-hours." Covered items include batteries used in common household products such as remote controls, toys, flashlights, cordless power tools, portable chargers, and drones.
Additionally, the expansion incorporates medium-format rechargeable batteries found in electric lawn equipment, snowblowers, e-bikes, and e-scooters. By widening eligibility, Vermont aims to reduce fire risks linked to improper lithium-ion disposal while strengthening long-term environmental stewardship efforts statewide.
