Norway currently features nearly 50 destinations that have earned the national 'Sustainable Destination' label, reflecting a structured commitment to environmentally responsible tourism development. The certification emphasizes reducing the ecological footprint of travel while safeguarding natural landscapes, biodiversity, and local ecosystems.

Destinations participating in the program implement measurable strategies to lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve waste management, promote energy efficiency, and encourage sustainable transportation solutions. The framework also supports the responsible use of natural resources and long-term environmental stewardship, ensuring that tourism growth does not compromise environmental integrity.

Established in 2013, Norway’s Sustainable Destination program is built on defined criteria and performance indicators that are systematically measured and monitored. Certified destinations are reassessed every three years and must demonstrate documented environmental improvements to maintain their designation. The standard has received GSTC-Recognized status from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, confirming its alignment with internationally recognized sustainability principles and reinforcing Norway’s leadership in environmentally responsible destination management.
