Siemens Smart Infrastructure Utilizes Bio-Based Materials
Kalin Ned — October 15, 2025Siemens Smart Infrastructure has introduced a new series of sustainable electrical products. The industrial coupling relays, known as the SIRIUS 3RQ4, stand out for their housing, which is derived from a significant proportion of bio-based material. This material — a plastic developed in cooperation with the engineering materials firm Envalior — is notable for sourcing approximately seventy percent of its raw material from used cooking oil, a waste product collected from the food service industry and households. The resulting polymer maintains the necessary technical specifications for industrial applications — from high resistance to heat and chemicals to flame-retardant properties. It is also free of halogens and other substances of concern.
Siemens Smart Infrastructure offers its new sustainable electrical product range in three distinct relay models to suit various operational contexts — a robust variant built for demanding or hazardous environments, a plug-in version for ease of maintenance and replacement, and a solid-state model that provides silent, high-speed switching with reduced energy loss and a long operational lifespan.
