The Athenaeum Hotel’s 'Living Wall' has undergone a significant reinvestment that strengthens its role as an important ecological asset in central London. The refurbishment introduces a selection of resilient plant species chosen specifically for their environmental value, their capacity to thrive in an urban climate, and their ability to support local biodiversity. While many original plants remain, new additions further enhance the installation’s ecological function.

Species such as "Viburnum tinus, Pyracantha ‘Orange Glow’, Origanum vulgare, and Ligustrum vicaryi provide year-round nectar for pollinators, berries for small birds, and expanded habitat variety, contributing to a healthier urban ecosystem." These plants also enrich the wall’s texture and seasonal color, demonstrating how aesthetic and ecological design can coexist.

Crucially, the Living Wall delivers measurable environmental benefits, "absorbing approximately 757 kilograms of CO₂ and generating 559 kilograms of oxygen each year." In a densely populated area, it supports cleaner air, mitigates heat, and offers a natural response to urban climate pressures.
