Island-Based Anti-Plastic Campaigns
The ‘This for That’ Campaign Encourages Sustainability
Debra John — April 2, 2026The 'This for That' campaign is a regional initiative aimed at reducing plastic pollution across Pacific Island tourism destinations, where environmental sustainability is closely linked to economic resilience. Introduced at the South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) 2026, the program promotes the integration of low-impact practices within the tourism sector.
Central to the campaign is the replacement of single-use plastics with reusable, compostable, or durable alternatives. Tourism operators are encouraged to adopt items such as refillable containers and non-plastic service materials, supported by practical implementation tools and guidance resources.
The initiative is further reinforced by a certification framework designed to track progress and ensure accountability. With a target of eliminating single-use plastics from the regional tourism industry by 2035, the campaign outlines a phased and scalable transition. These measures reflect a broader commitment to protecting marine ecosystems, reducing waste, and advancing sustainable tourism practices across the Pacific region.
