Trane Technologies' Thermal Battery Storage Systems are Effiicient

References: independent & trane

Trane Technologies’ thermal battery systems, often described as "ice batteries," pair chillers with insulated ice storage tanks to shift cooling load across time. The systems operate by producing ice during off‑peak or low‑cost periods, which is effectively "charging" the thermal battery and subsequently discharging that stored cooling during peak demand, allowing buildings to reduce onsite chiller runtime when grid electricity is most expensive or carbon‑intensive.

Beyond peak‑shifting, Trane positions these systems as a tool for grid interaction and decarbonization: integrated controls enable demand response, support greater use of renewable generation, and can replace or reduce the need for fossil‑fuel‑based heating equipment when combined with electric heat‑pump strategies. Configurations include pretested air‑cooled chiller plants, ice tanks, and packaged pump skids to simplify installation and deliver predictable operational performance for commercial and institutional applications.
