Water Resource Recovery Facilities

San Francisco's Treasure Island Boasts an Award-Winning Design

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is replacing a decades-old wastewater treatment plant on Treasure Island with a new water resource recovery that has received a high-level sustainability certification — the Envision Platinum Award. This project is a critical component of a larger redevelopment plan for the island that will add thousands of new homes and residents.

The award-winning water resource recovery plant is designed to be highly efficient, and its design promises to drastically reduce its own consumption of potable water by reusing water from the treatment process internally. It will also produce a significant volume of purified recycled water for community uses like irrigation and toilet flushing.

Beyond its core function, the facility incorporates environmental enhancements such as a constructed wetland that will create wildlife habitat and improve water quality before discharge into the San Francisco Bay. The design also includes architectural considerations and public art to better integrate the infrastructure into the community it serves.
