The Maldives Launches a ' Tech4Nature Project' for Whale Sharks
Debra John — February 11, 2026The Maldives launched a 'Tech4Nature Project' for the protection of whale sharks through a collaborative initiative involving the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Ministry of Tourism and Environment of the Republic of Maldives, and Huawei. The project focuses on modernizing the management and conservation practices within the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), with an emphasis on protecting whale shark populations while supporting sustainable tourism.
SAMPA is the largest marine protected area in the Maldives and serves as a globally significant, year-round aggregation site for whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). Its size, ecological importance, and high visitor volume present challenges for traditional monitoring and enforcement methods. The Tech4Nature Project addresses these challenges by introducing advanced field monitoring technologies and real-time communication tools for marine rangers.
The initiative also supports SAMPA’s progress toward IUCN Green List recognition, promoting transparent, measurable conservation outcomes while safeguarding marine biodiversity and local livelihoods dependent on healthy ecosystems.
