Canada Nickel Company is Testing Carbon Storage at Its Mine

Canada Nickel Company, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin and with financial backing from the U.S. Department of Energy’s ARPA-E program, has initiated a field trial for a carbon storage technique at its Crawford nickel mining site. This pilot program involves injecting carbon dioxide dissolved in water deep into a geological formation rich in magnesium-based minerals.
The scientific premise of this trial is that these minerals will react with the CO2 and transform the gas into a stable solid form within six months. The project is separate from Canada Nickel Company's other carbon management initiatives and is intended to assess the feasibility of this method for large-scale, permanent carbon sequestration. It, however, supports the company's broader objective of establishing a net-zero industrial operation.
