Carbon Management Facilities

CF Industries Commences Operations at Donaldsonville

CF Industries has initiated operations for a new unit at its Donaldsonville carbon management facility. At this site, the company processes carbon dioxide captured from its ammonia production — a primary ingredient in nitrogen-based fertilizers, which are essential for modern agriculture and global food production. The CO2 is then prepared for transport and underground storage, while CF Industries' ouutput can be termed 'low-carbon ammonia.' CF Industries' carbon management facility infrastructure is designed to prevent up to two million metric tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere each year. The company is collaborating with ExxonMobil, which is responsible for the transportation and the final injection of the gas into geological formations. Thus, the project enables the production of a lower-carbon version of ammonia and allows the company to benefit from a federal tax credit incentivizing carbon sequestration.
